Customize by size

The finished measurements are the actual measurements of the hat. Choose a size that gives you approximately 1"/2.54cm negative ease. I knit a women's small (21"/53cm) for myself and my head is approximately 22"/56cm around.

Instructions

As written, the pattern includes instructions for a Women's size Medium (22"/56cm).
This message will self-destruct when you select a custom size.

Using smallest needle with CC and waste yarn, provisionally CO {{pattern.cast_on}} sts.

pm and join for knitting in the round, taking care not to twist.

Brim

{{pattern.brim_rows}} rounds:
k all sts
Next round:
switch to MC and largest needle. k all sts.
Next round:
p all sts.

Using largest circular needle:

{{pattern.brim_rows}} rounds:
k all sts (approximately {{pattern.brim_height}}"/{{pattern.brim_height | inToCm}}cm).

Brim fold

This requires a little dexterity and some thinking, but really it's just a bunch of fancy knit two togethers. Once you have it down, I promise it goes quickly!

Place the provisionally CO stitches onto your original smaller needle. Fold the CC brim up inside of your hat so the two sets of needles are next to each in other. In front you should have your working MC on the largest needle, in back you should have your CC brim on the smallest needle. The wrong sides of each color should be hidden.

Next round: Using your MC and largest needle, knit the first st from your larger needle together with the first st from your smaller needle and remove both sts off of their needles. The st you just made should be on your larger working needle.

By the end of this round, you should have {{pattern.cast_on}} MC sts on your largest needle, and no sts on your smallest needle.

Body

Work body in the Garter Rib pattern until hat measures approximately {{pattern.brim_height + pattern.body_height}}"/{{pattern.brim_height + pattern.body_height | inToCm }}cm from brim edge. It doesn't matter if you end the Garter Rib repeat on Round 1 or Round 2.

Garter Rib

Round 1:
p3, k1.
Round 2:
k all sts.

Decreases

Switch to your DPNs when the number of sts becomes too small to manage on circular needles.

If desired, you can continue to work the crown decreases in the Garter Rib pattern.

Pattern version

Information

Current version: 4 (March 15, 2015)

Version 2: Corrected missing CC for brim CO; corrected missing yarn weight labels for custom sizes.

Verison 3: Corrected last line of brim instructions before folding; originally read "Using smallest circular needle, k all sts", changed to "Using largest circular needle, k all sts".

Version 4: Updated calculation that generates the number of inches knit before beginning decreases. Only impacted a few sizes, and it was pretty obvious (ex: 2 inches instead of 7 inches).
